Description

Who Governs Here?

A major issue in this election year of 2012 is the power of wealthy corporations to pour large amounts of money into campaigns to influence candidates’ elections. That largesse was especially important in the 2010 elections. But money for a candidate’s campaign is not the whole story. Between elections, corporate donors press for particular issues before public officials by creating and funding think tanks, foundations, and other means to influence public opinion on some issue. They lobby for their issues. Their efforts are not small, but neither are the issues they try to influence. Some issues examined here in Madison, Wisconsin, are the products of the 2010 election. What happens here about the possible recall of the governor and what happens to last year’s new law on collective bargaining may be harbingers of the future. Moreover, other issues have been raised by the conservative movement in the United States, such as the privatization of the public schools and the new laws requiring every citizen to present a Photo-ID at the polls in order to vote. The election this year will give us signals as to the future of significant social policies in this country.
